چکیده

— This paper investigates the concept of using body bias as a design tool to optimize the timing jitter and power dissipation in single ended CMOS ring oscillators. A theoretical model for phase noise and timing jitter in ring oscillators is summarized and used as a basis for simulation of the impulse sensitivity function. Simulation results are then used to estimate timing jitter and phase noise and a comparison is made with the theoretical prediction. It is shown that simulation results are in good agreement with theory and that body bias can allow ~10% power reduction in the ring oscillator with minimal effect on (to slightly improving) timing jitter.

A New Solution to Analysis of CMOS Ring Oscillators

New equations are proposed for frequency and amplitude of a ring oscillator. The method is general enough to be used for all types of delay stages. Using exact largesignal circuit analysis, closed form equations for estimating the frequency and amplitude of a high frequency ring oscillator are derived as an example. The method takes into account the effect of various parasitic capacitors to...

A Second-Order All-Digital TDC with Low-Jitter Frequency Shift Oscillators and Dynamic Flipflops

We present a small-area second-order all-digital time-todigital converter (TDC) with two frequency shift oscillators (FSOs) comprising inverter chains and dynamic flipflops featuring low jitter. The proposed FSOs can maintain their phase states through continuous oscillation, unlike conventional gated ring oscillators (GROs) that are affected by transistor leakage. Our proposed FSOTDC is more r...

A Study on the Characteristics of a Temperature Sensor with an Improved Ring Oscillator

This paper presents low power and high speed on-chip temperature sensor that uses only two ring oscillators which have different CMOS delay characteristics, counters and Time-to-Digital Converters (TDC) to maintain the performance benefit of the CMOS digital circuit. This novel temperature sensor does not require any bias circuits or external reference clocks. It measures the delay variations b...

An ultra-compact LC-VCO using a stacked-spiral inductor

This paper proposes an ultra compact LC-VCO. Due to the speed-up of CMOS digital circuits, jitter of ring oscillators is becoming a critical problem. Even though an LC-VCO has a better phase noise, a layout size of on-chip inductor is a problem as a clock generator. Thus, the proposed LC-VCO consists of a very compact stacked-spiral inductor and active components placed are beneath the inductor...
